The Essence of Stress

Caleb Flowers

Someone asked me recently, have you learned anything from your infant son? The answer is yes! Every day I learn something novel from him. One thing I learned from him is that babies do not get stressed out over little things. They trust their parents to handle anything threatening or stressful. This level of trust allows them to explore the world around them without hesitation. Being stress-free enables him to transfer his happy demeanor to anyone observing his smiling face. David’s words in Psalms convey his trust in God.

“Those that trust in the LORD, Are as Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but abides forever (Psalm 125:1).

After the feeding of the 5,000 in Matthew 14, Jesus tells his disciples to retreat to a boat and go with him to the other side. We find a powerful example of trust in Jesus demonstrated by Peter.

“And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God (Matthew 14:25-33).”

What is the essence of stress? Taking one’s eyes off Jesus. We need put our trust in Jesus like babies put their trust in their parents, and in doing so, we will be happier.
