If you love college basketball, March is your favorite month of the year. Whole basketball seasons hinge on the success of winning the national championship. It is madness created by success or failure because of one game and possibly one point determining the season’s result. The craziness in college basketball comes from the unpredictable results of who will win. Unranked basketball teams routinely beat high achieving ranked teams. In the book of Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar went mad for seven seasons or seven years for his arrogant attitude and failing to give credit to God for the success that was afforded to him. In the book of Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar requests the help of Daniel with dreams that were disturbing him. Daniel, the prophet of God, was the only person able to interpret the dreams for the King.
“This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king: that you be driven away from mankind and your dwelling place be with the beasts of the field, and you be given grass to eat like cattle and be drenched with the dew of heaven; and seven periods of time will pass over you, until you recognize that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and bestows it on whomever He wishes. ‘Therefore, O king, may my advice be pleasing to you: break away now from your sins by doing righteousness and from your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor, in case there may be a prolonging of your prosperity” (Daniel 4:24-25, 27).
What can we learn from this passage in Daniel? We need to recognize that there is a God. Be kind to one another and help those who are less fortunate than you. God wants people to be righteous based on His standard, not yours. The NCAA basketball standard is to win a National Championship in March. We need to try our best to be honest with ourselves and compare our lives to the Biblical standard. Live for God and avoid the madness of our own making.
