If you watch the news you will see division at home, school, and church. Lately, all that can be seen is news story after news story discussing the reactions to the latest controversy. The goal of this writing is to get above the debate and go straight to the source about the origin of division. Keep in mind that division within a society is not accidental. We know that division leads to failure as a nation, see (Mark 3:24-25). There is always a source behind the spread of division and it is not from God. Frankly, this article is being written because in this author’s view too many Christians have lost sight of scripture and lean more toward a biased opinion based on distorted facts. What does the Bible say about the source of division?
“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19–21).
Opinion should NEVER take place of God’s truth. Scripture tells us that division and spreading division is a work of the flesh. The consequence of spreading such division is forfeiture of the kingdom of heaven. Ask yourself, does spewing an opinion on a social media platform bring you closer or further away from God? Are you okay with forfeiting your place in heaven for a media cycle sensation piece? What makes matters worse is that a misguided opinion can possibly close the door to someone hearing the gospel. Brothers and Sisters is media supported division worth a person’s soul?
In closing, let us do better as Christians to not repay evil for evil but do good. We all need to be intentional about conversations, especially, in the public forum known as social media. Be strong and “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31, Luke 10:17, Galatians 5:14, James 2:8).
“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace” (James 3:17–18).
If you want to heal our nation, we need to be people of peace and stop spreading the division provided by unfair and unbalanced media.
